Confirmation is, at its core, a new beginning. It is a time when middle school students are encouraged to make a personal decision to follow Jesus. In Confirmation, we strive to introduce them to Jesus: who He is, what He said and did, and the meaning of His death and resurrection for us today. It is our deep desire that each student will come to a new understanding of himself/herself as a spiritual person, making an age-appropriate decision to accept and follow Jesus with all of their heart, mind, soul, and strength.

Confirmation is designed to be experiential, participatory, incarnational, and connective. It is intended to be a rigorous baptism into the life of Jesus and his church. This journey will require a lot from the students and, for that reason, it will require a lot from the parents as well. You may have to change your routines and rhythms to enable your students to fully participate, but the outcomes are well worth the investment during this limited season of time.

Because there are only seven sessions (plus the retreat) we cannot permit absences. The exception being only one class for an emergency or illness. Please check your calendars for any conflicts and do not hesitate to wait a year if necessary.

For the students, the requirements to be confirmed are:

  • Attend all of the Confirmation Classes

o   Sunday, February 24, 2:00-4:00pm, Church Narthex

o   Sunday, March 3, 2:00-4:00pm, Church Narthex

o   Sunday, March 10, 2:00-4:00pm, Church Narthex

o   Sunday, March 17, NO CLASS, OFF WEEK — SPRING BREAK

o   Sunday, March 24, 2:00-4:00pm, Church Narthex

o   Sunday, March 31, 2:00-4:00pm, Church Narthex

o   Sunday, April 7, 2:00-4:00pm, Church Narthex

o   Sunday, April 14, 2:00-4:00pm, Church Narthex

  • Attend both Sunday Services each week of Confirmation

o   As part of their Confirmation journey, students will be required to serve during the first service (9:00am) and attend the Second Service (10:30am) each week of Confirmation, except March 17, the “off week” for Spring Break.

  • Attend the Confirmation Retreat

o   The Retreat will be held off campus on Easter Weekend: Good Friday, April 19 – Holy Saturday, April 20, 2019. This is a required event.

  • Read the Gospel of Mark

o   Pastor Kevin will explain this to the students as part of their Confirmation Class.

  • Write a letter to Pastor Kevin telling him why they wish to be Confirmed.

o   This will be explained to students as part of their Confirmation Class.

  • Be baptized

o   Students who were not baptized as infants (or otherwise baptized) MUST be baptized during our Churchwide Sunrise Baptism on Easter Sunday, April 21, at DuBois Park Beach. If your student has not yet been baptized, this will be their opportunity to do so in advance of Confirmation. Please call the Church Office at 561.747.8340 to place their name on the list.

  • Be willing and ready to follow Christ and be Confirmed.

o   The Service of Confirmation will be Sunday, April 28, 2019 at 9:30am.

Confirmation Sunday will be a very special day for the students. Parents, relatives, and friends may be seated anywhere in the sanctuary. Confirmands will be asked to sit together in assigned seats. For the Confirmation process, the students will come forward where each one is prayed for individually and will be presented with a Confirmation Cross. After services that day, Confirmands will be dismissed together to the Chapel to receive one their most meaningful gifts of the day… LETTERS!!

At each Confirmation, as a SURPRISE to the students, we ask the parents to collect personal letters from relatives, friends, neighbors, teachers, coaches... whomever has been important in that student’s life, including MOM and DAD!

These short but important letters are written to express appreciation for who the students are becoming as young adults in the church. The letters are meant to uplift the highest qualities and characteristics of your child. The letters are also a good place for parents and others to share a bit of their own faith as well. Collecting letters by email is often a convenient way to manage this. If you have any questions about this, please don’t hesitate to call the Church Office.

We ask that you solicit and collect these letters in secret, and bring them to the church office no later than Tuesday, April 16th, by 4:00 p.m. Especially when kept secret, these letters become one of the most heart-touching moments of the student’s Confirmation experience.

Confirmation is a new beginning with Christ as Lord, Savior, and friend. We hope you will encourage your student in his or her spiritual life, in Scripture reading, youth fellowship, and Sunday worship.

Ultimately, though, the decision as to whether or not to be confirmed must be a personal choice made by each student without coercion. You and I cannot—nor should we—make the decision for them. Each week of the Confirmation Class, Pastor Kevin will tell the students that he will support the decision they make, knowing that some may not be personally ready to express faith in Christ by the end of our time together. If your student decides to not be confirmed, then we ask you to respect their wish but encourage them to continue to be a part of our youth program post-Confirmation.

Pastor Kevin is also willing to meet personally with any family that wants/needs to further explore questions of faith.

Finally, the cost of confirmation is $75.00. While this represents about half of what we spend per student on Confirmation, we are committed to turning no one away from this experience for any financial reason.

TO ENROLL: Call the Church Office at 561.747.8340 or email susiesmith@jupiterfirstchurch.org. You must enroll before Noon on Friday, February 15th.

TO PAY: Payment must be made at or before the first class on February 24th.

Thank you for the privilege of allowing us to share this experience with your student!
