Prayer Shawl Ministry

Contact: Pat Sickles (561-746-7993)

Monday Evenings from 6:30-8:00pm &
Tuesday Afternoons from 2-3:30pm
Location: The Center for Spiritual Renewal

The purpose of this gathering is to combine the love of knitting, crocheting, and quilting into a powerful ministry that reaches out to those in need of encouragement. Shawls have been made for centuries, providing warmth and comfort to the wearer. Weaving healing prayers into the fabric of the shawl has resulted in a ministry that reaches out to those in need of support.

If you have a special love for handiwork or would love to learn how to create a prayer shawl you are invited to be a part of this group. You are invited to become part of this group that meets weekly!
All enjoy the fellowship of this ministry of compassion and creativity.

Prayer Shawl Team supports the Motherbear Charitable Organization

The JupiterFirst Church Prayer Shawl team knitted and crocheted seventeen teddy bears in support of the Motherbear Charitable Organization based in Minneapolis. This group collects the bears, knit red hearts on all of them, and then ship them to children in Africa who have HIV/AIDS. To learn more about this organization go to www.motherbear.org. From their site you can see cute pictures of the children holding the bears.

Prayer Shawl Annual Report

We are delighted to report that in 2018 we made 382 prayer shawls, lap robes, afghans, hats, scarves, and baby blankets for those in need of healing love, comfort, and warmth within in congregation, in the community,  the state, and the country. Each baby baptized in our church is given one of our baptism blankets. We gave Jupiter Medical Center 24 prayer shawls, 4 baby    blankets, and 4 hats. We gave El Sol 7 baby blankets and 27 hats.

We provided 26 children’s afghans to Camp Boggy Creek (boggycreek.org) in Eustis, Florida, where chronically ill children can go for a week or weekend of fun camp, supervised by a team of expert health care providers and others. The parents get a breather while the children have fun. Each child takes home a knitted lap robe and a hand-sewn teddy bear.

In October, we sent 11 shawls (via Temple Beth Am) to the Temple of Life in Pittsburgh for the families of shooting victims. Also in October, we delivered 69 red newborn hats to Jupiter Medical Center labor and delivery as part of the American Heart Association’s Little Hats, Big Hearts promotion each year in February.

Our biggest continuous project is making warm hats and scarves for the homeless in San Francisco and Cleveland. In November, we sent them a total of 104 hats and 64 scarves. Our former member, Linda Williams, went to the San Francisco Night Mission service on a chilly December night when the hats and scarves were given to the shivering homeless people. She said it was a very moving experience.

After thirteen years, we treasure the fellowship, fun and laughter that accompanies our weekly meetings. Please join us Mondays 6:30-8:00pm and Tuesdays 2:00-3:30pm in CSR.

"Sincere thanks for the beautiful shawl. It was a constant comfort to me in the hospital and I could feel the love in every loop. I now take it with me to chemo so I can continue to feel wrapped in your prayers. You have no idea how helpful it is to feel like I am not walking this path alone."

"Thank you for the lovely Prayer Shawl. It was so nice to have it and hold it during my sons memorial service. I will keep it near and dear to my heart."

" The warm and fuzzy Prayer Shawl is exactly the best medicine anyone could have given me. Thank you for this beautiful gift that comes with your prayers and Gods Grace."

"My name is Tommi Sitton. I am Jim and Muriel Sitton's Sister-in-Law. I am helping them to thank some people who have helped them during this difficult time. Muriel loves the prayer shawl that was given by the ladies from your church. It is perfect for Muriel because she is always cold when the rest of us are hot. It also reminds her that so many people love her and are praying for them. So, on their behalf, thank you for your kindness. God bless, Tommi Sitton."
